Eye Tracking Enabled Explainable-AI for Empowering Resource Scarce Neurological Healthcare in Pakistan

In Pakistan, where there is only 1 neurologist per million people, millions of patients suffering from epilepsy, seizures, and other neurological disorders remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. In rural areas, the lack of specialists often leads to misinterpretations, stigma, and incorrect treatments, worsening patient outcomes.

We are building AI-powered Tele-Neurology system that empowers doctors with advanced EEG-based diagnostics, Explainable AI (XAI), and Eye-Tracking Technology. This project is a collaboration between Aston University (UK), NUST (Pakistan), and Fauji Foundation Hospital (Pakistan) to create an affordable, scalable, and intelligent solution for neurological healthcare.

This project is supported by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). For more details about the program, visit: https://www.ukri.org/councils/epsrc/.

What is NeuReader?

NeuReader is an AI-driven neurological diagnostic platform designed to:

  • Automatically analyze EEG recordings to detect neurological abnormalities.
  • Generate human-readable medical reports using Explainable AI (XAI).
  • Utilize eye-tracking technology to improve AI accuracy by learning from neurologists’ gaze patterns.
  • Provide low-cost, scalable solutions for rural healthcare facilities.
  • Enable telehealth connectivity, bridging the gap between urban specialists and rural patients.

With NeuReader, even junior doctors at rural health centers can leverage AI-powered diagnostics to deliver high-quality care without needing extensive neurology expertise.

Real-World Impact

  • Rural Clinics Get Expert Insights – Bringing neurological expertise to regions with no neurologists.
  • Faster Diagnoses, Fewer Errors – Reducing misdiagnosis and treatment delays.
  • Supporting Medical Training – Helping junior doctors and trainees understand and interpret EEG data.

Meet the Team

NeuReader is backed by a world-class team of AI researchers and neurologists from leading institutions:
