Abstract

Smart greenhouse technologies are transforming modern agriculture by enabling controlled, data-driven, and resource-efficient crop production. Through the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, automation systems, artificial intelligence, machine learning, imaging technologies, and smart dashboards, greenhouses can continuously monitor and regulate key environmental and crop-growth parameters such as temperature, humidity, light, CO₂, irrigation, nutrition, and plant health.

This workshop will discuss the emerging role of smart greenhouse systems in addressing major agricultural challenges, including climate variability, water scarcity, resource optimization, crop disease monitoring, yield prediction, and sustainable food production. It will also highlight practical challenges in the deployment of smart greenhouse technologies, such as sensor reliability, data quality, cost-effective infrastructure, AI model development, system scalability, farmer adoption, and long-term maintenance.

The session will provide participants with an overview of current technological trends, research opportunities, and practical considerations for designing and implementing intelligent greenhouse systems. By bringing together expertise from agriculture, artificial intelligence, computer vision, IoT, and smart systems, the workshop aims to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and support the development of sustainable, technology-enabled agricultural solutions.

Speakers

Prof. Dr. Yusuf Sinan Akgul is a Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at Gebze Technical University (GTU), Türkiye, where he also serves as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and leads the university’s Computer Vision Laboratory. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer and Information Sciences from the University of Delaware (USA) in 2000. His research spans computer vision, machine learning, medical image analysis, and pattern recognition, with applications ranging from healthcare to smart agriculture. He currently leads the Turkish side of an international Türkiye–Pakistan research partnership on AI-driven smart greenhouse technologies, conducted jointly with the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST). Throughout his career, he has championed cross-disciplinary collaboration, demonstrating how artificial intelligence can connect researchers from widely different fields around shared scientific goals

Prof. Dr. Khawar Khurshid is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Namal University and also serves as Director Academics at Namal University. He is an academic and researcher working in the areas of machine learning and computer vision. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University, USA, with research focused on medical image processing using machine learning algorithms. Before joining Namal University, he served at SEECS, NUST for more than 13 years as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor. His expertise in machine learning, image processing, and computer vision is highly relevant to smart greenhouse technologies, particularly for AI-based crop monitoring, plant health assessment, automated visual inspection, and data-driven decision support. In this workshop, he will contribute insights on how intelligent algorithms and vision-based systems can support sustainable, efficient, and scalable greenhouse management.

Dr. Arham Muslim is an Assistant Professor at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), and serves as Head of the Department of IT & Innovative Technologies in Learning. He holds a Ph.D. in Learning Analytics from RWTH Aachen University, Germany. His expertise includes learning analytics, data-driven systems, technology-enhanced environments, and the design of intelligent digital platforms. In the context of smart greenhouse technologies, his experience supports the development of data-centric dashboards, monitoring systems, user-facing applications, and technology-enabled decision-support tools for sustainable agriculture.
