Abstract

Sustainable agriculture increasingly depends on smart, affordable, and locally adaptable technologies that can help farmers respond to climate variability, resource limitations, and changing food production needs. This workshop, “Building Capacity for Sustainable Agriculture Through Locally Optimized IoT Solutions,” focuses on the role of Internet of Things (IoT), data-driven monitoring, and intelligent decision-support systems in strengthening modern agricultural practices.

The workshop will explore how locally optimized IoT solutions can be designed and deployed to monitor key agricultural parameters such as soil moisture, temperature, humidity, irrigation, crop health, and environmental conditions. It will also highlight the importance of capacity building, interdisciplinary collaboration, and practical training in enabling researchers, students, and practitioners to develop sustainable technology solutions suited to local farming contexts.

Bringing together collaborators from DAAD-SDG, RPTU, NUST, and Gebze Technical University, the workshop aims to promote knowledge exchange, hands-on learning, and collaborative innovation in smart and sustainable agriculture. The session will provide participants with insights into current challenges, emerging opportunities, and practical approaches for using IoT-based systems to support climate-resilient, efficient, and locally relevant agricultural development.

Speakers

Dr. Christian Weis received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the TU Kaiserslautern, Germany, in 2014. From 1996 to 1998, he was with Mitsubishi Semiconductor Europe, Germany, where he was engaged in the design and development of microcontrollers. From 1998 to 2009, he was with Siemens Semiconductor, Infineon Technologies AG and Qimonda AG, Munich, Germany, in DRAM design. During this time frame, he was involved in DRAM design for graphics and commodity DRAM products. In 2006, he was a Design Team Leader for the 1Gb DDR3 DRAM, the first DDR3 volume product at Infineon/Qimonda. Since 2009, he has been with the Microelectronic System Design Research Group, TU Kaiserslautern, Germany. He holds more than 20 patents related to DRAMs and DRAM design, and has published more than 70 papers. His current research interests include DRAM controller design, Near- & In-Memory processing, 3D-integrated DRAMs, heterogeneous memory architectures, and MPSoCs.
