Abstract

Healthcare systems globally face significant challenges due to shortages of qualified staff and medical resources, especially in low- and middle-income countries such as Pakistan.
Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) offer potential solutions to enhance efficiency and diagnostic accuracy; however, local challenges — including limited data, clinical infrastructure, and financial constraints — must be addressed for sustainable adoption.

Speakers

Dr. Hassan Aqeel Khan

Dr. Hassan Aqeel Khan is a Senior Lecturer in Applied AI and Robotics at Aston University Birmingham, UK. His primary research interests include applications of Machine Learning and AI in Medical Imaging and Biomedical Signal Analysis.
He currently leads an EPSRC-funded project (£200,000) focusing on Explainable AI (XAI) for neurological data using large language models (LLMs). Across his career, he has participated in over £320,000 in funded projects (EPSRC, DAAD, Nokia Research Centre China, University of Jeddah, HEC Pakistan).
He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering (Michigan State University, 2015), an MSc with Distinction (University of Edinburgh, 2007), and a BSc (UET Taxila, 2003).

Prof. Dr. Faisal Shafait

Prof. Dr. Faisal Shafait has 15+ years of research and teaching experience in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. He completed his PhD in Computer Engineering from TU Kaiserslautern, Germany in 2008 with the highest distinction. Currently, he is working as a Professor at NUST School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS) as well as Director of the Deep Learning Laboratory at National Center of Artificial Intelligence (NCAI), Islamabad. Dr. Faisal has made a significant international reputation in the field of Artificial Intelligence by earning more than 14,500 citations. He is the only Pakistani and Muslim scientist to receive the prestigious IAPR/ICDAR Young Investigator Award by the International Association of Pattern Recognition and is included in the list of the World’s Top 2% Scientists compiled by Stanford University. He was conferred the Pride of Performance award by the President of Pakistan in March 2024.

Dr. Muhammad Naseer Bajwa

Dr. Muhammad Naseer Bajwa is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS), NUST. His expertise lies in trustworthy and explainable AI for healthcare and climate resilience.
His research spans explainable AI, uncertainty estimation, and bias mitigation in intelligent systems — with applications across ophthalmology, dermatology, radiology, neurology, and sustainability domains.
He earned his Doctor of Engineering with distinction from the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI GmbH), where he developed explainable computer-aided diagnostic systems.
Dr. Bajwa continues to collaborate with research institutions in Germany and the UK, contributing to interdisciplinary research, teaching, and mentorship.
