Abstract

Graduate study and postdoctoral research have never been more accessible across disciplines than they are today, and Türkiye has become a vibrant destination for international scholars seeking funded opportunities at the intersection of science, engineering, and industry. This seminar introduces NUST students to the landscape of master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral positions available in Türkiye, the funding mechanisms that support them, and the growing network of Türkiye–Pakistan research collaborations. Its central message is that artificial intelligence has emerged as a universal bonding agent between fields: a student trained in biology, agriculture, electrical engineering, or the social sciences can now collaborate meaningfully with researchers in entirely different domains, using AI as the shared language that connects data, methods, and ideas. Drawing on a live Türkiye–Pakistan smart-agriculture partnership that unites computer vision, plant biotechnology, IoT, and industrial innovation, the talk will show students how to position themselves for cross-disciplinary research careers and take their first concrete steps toward a graduate or postdoctoral path in Türkiye.

Speakers

Prof. Dr. Yusuf Sinan Akgul is a Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at Gebze Technical University (GTU), Türkiye, where he also serves as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and leads the university’s Computer Vision Laboratory. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer and Information Sciences from the University of Delaware (USA) in 2000. His research spans computer vision, machine learning, medical image analysis, and pattern recognition, with applications ranging from healthcare to smart agriculture. He currently leads the Turkish side of an international Türkiye–Pakistan research partnership on AI-driven smart greenhouse technologies, conducted jointly with the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST). Throughout his career, he has championed cross-disciplinary collaboration, demonstrating how artificial intelligence can connect researchers from widely different fields around shared scientific goals
